James Series: Spiritual Maturity, part 4 – Outline

James Chapter 3:1

Let’s take a look at what this verse is talking about… Can only a few really teach? Should the preacher do your Christianity for you? We need to examine this in context…

1) Teachers will be held accountable.
- 2 Timothy 3:10-11 Is our teaching what we are known for? Like Paul?
- 1 Timothy 3:16 “save yourself and your hearers”
- 2 Timothy 3:12 Why will everyone who wants to live a godly life be persecuted? Because they will be teaching the Word. We will be held accountable for what we teach and don’t teach.

2) Teachers must be reliable.
- 2 Timothy 2:2 “Reliable men” who are qualified to teach.
- Romans 10:14-15 People must be sent preach.
- Hebrews 5:11-14 You have to have people who want to learn. “…by this time you ought to be teachers…” This was written to Hebrews who had become Christians. It was written to all of them, not just apostles. We need to use the scriptures with constant use.
- 2 Timothy 4:1-5 We need the scriptures to distinguish good teachers from bad.
- 1 Timothy 4:1-3 Can you distinguish the teachings of God from the teachings of demons? If you teach “little things” like abstaining from certain foods wrong, you will also teach the “big things” wrong.

3) Teachers must be imitable
- Hebrews 13:7 As a Christian, you are a result of your teacher’s faith. Imitate his/her faith and teach someone else about God; like your teacher taught you. Timothy learned from his Mother and Grandmother. They were not apostles.
- 1 Thessalonians 1:2-8 If there is faith on the inside, there will be work, labor, endurance on the outside.
