James Series: Spiritual Maturity, part 1 – Outline

We are the only “Bibles” some people will ever read. What do you say? How do you act? What do you call people to? Are you a servant of the Lord who is spiritually mature?

- James 1:1 As God’s people, we are servants, not the served, anymore. What gives you pure joy?
- Pure joy with many kinds of trials? No, it’s not a typo. You can handle trials with joy through wisdom.
- A faith that has not been tested cannot be trusted.

- Four stages of faith:
1) Chaos. No faith. (infancy)
2) Conformity. Imitating others. You don’t yet understand the fullness of what you do. (toddler)
3) Questioning. A tough, but vital stage. Without roots you may fall away. (teen)
4) Conviction. You can give an answer for the hope that you have. (adult)

- James was a brother of Jesus.
- John 7:2-5 Jesus’ brothers don’t believe in Him. They misunderstood his mission.
- I Corinthians 15:7 James was one of the select Jesus appeared to after the Resurrection.
- Galatians 2:9 James is a pillar in the Church.
- Acts 15 James oversees this important meeting.
- 62 AD James martyred.
- Acts 21:18-20 Paul meets with James before he is martyred
- James grew to be spiritually mature.

How can you test if you are spiritually mature?
1) How do you view and respond to trials and temptations? Panic or peace?
2) How do you view and respond to riches and blessings?
- James 1:9-11 Riches are unstable.
- 2 Corinthians 8:1 Church centered. 8: 2-9 From the heart.
8:10-15 Proportionate to income.
- 2 Corinthians 9:1-5 To bless others. 9:6-11 The giver is blessed. 9:12-15 Because people mature, there is gratitude, others are helped, others thank God because of you.
3) How do you view you relationship with God and people?
- James 1:19-27 How you treat others is how you treat God.
-John 10:17 “I lay it down of my own accord.”
- Are you a servant? Are you a servant who willingly chooses to serve his master? Jesus served us. He laid His life down.
