The Greatest Sermon Ever Preached – Outline
- It lasted 6 hours. Preached on a weekday, not a Sunday. No pulpit. No notes prepared. Less than 60 words used. Took a lifetime to prepare.
1) Mark 15:25-39
For 3 hours there is darkness. Jesus dies. Then there is light.
- Curtain separating the Most Holy place is torn from top to bottom. It was 4 inches thick. Now all mankind could enter God’s presence. God’s Spirit can go into the world.
- Centurion soldier, a hardened man, says, “Surely this man was the Son of God.” (vs. 39)
- What was the uniqueness of this Crucifixion? 2 Corinthians 5:21 He took on all our sins. Isaiah 59:1-2 These sins separate from God.
- A bleeding Messiah is meant to move our hearts.
2) Luke 23:33-34 “Father, forgive them…” Forgiveness is just as essential to salvation as baptism. Jesus forgave before anyone asked for forgiveness.
- Matthew 18:21-35 You keep forgiving…
- The mark of the kingdom is that everyone has a dream. If you have nothing to live for, you have nothing to die for.
3) John 19:25-27 “Here is your son, Here is your mother.” Even with the pain of the Cross, Jesus was thinking of others.
- As disciples, we have already committed until death. What are you holding on to?
4) John 19:28 “I am thirsty.” The drink offering in Old Testament Numbers 15 was red wine poured on a lamb sacrifice which made an aroma pleasing to God. It’s when you pour yourself out that your life is a pleasing aroma to God. How many studies have you been in? How many little “headaches” have held you back and been used as excuses?
5) Luke 23:46 “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” Jesus had a loud voice. God could have heard him if it was soft. He spoke loudly because He wanted people to hear.
- Exodus 14:29 “I’m gonna trust God, but not any man.” That’s not what’s going on here. Moses was so flawed he didn’t make it into the Promised Land. Yet, people were called to trust God and leaders.
6) Luke 23:39-43 “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”
- Two false doctrines: infant baptism and “pray Jesus into your heart.” Romans 6:2-4 We need to share in the death. Acts 2:38
7) John 19:30 “It is finished.” God turns the lights on. Even the jaded centurion is convicted.
- Nehemiah 1:8-9 Nehemiah’s prayer comes alive in our day. If we seek with all our heart, He will gather his people from the farthest horizon.
