Women’s Workshop: The Old Has Gone, The New Has Come – Outline
2 Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”
As we start 2010, it is a good time to consider: where are you at with the old being gone (and staying gone) and the new being new? We know it is refreshing to get rid of the old, like spring cleaning, or cleaning out the closets, or the kid’s bedroom. And so is bringing in the new, a new pair of shoes can feel like it boosts your whole wardrobe. But let’s think spiritually: Who were you in 2009? What old needs to be gotten rid of? Who will you be in 2010? What new needs to come in?
- God created everything to get old, so that we will reach a different level of humility. Because without humility, we can’t find God.
- There are only 3 things that will last: God, the Word, and the souls of men and women.
- Wherever we are at in life and wherever we are at spiritually the old still needs to go and the new needs to come
Psalm 139:13-14 – The Lord knows you!
- This should give us great comfort and security
- We have needs and God wants to meet all of them. The question is not: can he, but will we let him?
- The problem is, we turn God given needs into our greed. That greed becomes what separates us from God and is the old that we get stuck in.
- The Bible says that with repentance comes refreshing
Colossians 3:5-10 – Take off the old, put on the new!
- When you put something to death, it doesn’t come back
- What if you left the trash laying around, a week, a month, a year? Don’t leave your sin lying around. Get rid of it!
- Put on the new self: how are you doing with zeal, purity, etc.
- There is no excuse to leave the old around
Mark 12:29-31 – The greatest commandment
- We love ourselves a lot. We feed ourselves when we’re hungry, feel sad when things don’t go our way, etc.
- Do we love others like we love ourselves
- To love God is to obey him (John 14:15)
Isaiah 32:1
- Sounds pretty appealing, but how is your peace? Your confidence?
- These are fruits of a righteous life
- Satan is making a joke of you if you are a Christian and this doesn’t describe you
Galations 5:1, 13-15
- The yoke of slavery brings us back to the old
- see 1 Corinthinas 13 for the most excellent way – love. How is your patience, trust, etc?
