Mark Series part 20: Up, Down and Up Again – Outline

In life you’re going to be brought down at times. The call is to get back up again.

Mark 10:1
- Jesus had a heart to teach people what is right.
- Jesus would teach a general lesson in public, yet teach the full meaning to those who really want to know (his disciples).
- Vs 5. Look at the hard heart. When you have a hard heart, you test Jesus, like the Pharisees.

Mark 10:13
- Soft heart. Jesus and the children.
- Children are typically more trusting, teachable, pure-hearted, and innocent minded. Adopt these traits.
- Selfishness will keep you from being receptive to Jesus.
- Matthew 5:3 Poor in spirit are blessed.
- Grace is not cheap. Praying Jesus into your heart does not save you. Conversely, being the most fired-up disciple doesn’t get you into heaven. God’s grace gets you in.
- Use Hebrews 4:12 and 3:12 to soften your heart. Sin will harden your heart, but the word will soften your heart.

Mark 10:17 Rich Ruler
- To inherit eternal life, give up everything, follow Jesus (obey him).
- Unsurrendered heart: rich ruler. His treasure was in this life. Choose God over money and comfort. Look at your life.

Luke 19:1
- Zacchaeus was rich too. But he welcomed Jesus and repented.
- He had surrendered heart. He initiated.

Mark 10:29
- Some of you don’t feel blessed because you haven’t given up anything. Must surrender.

1 Timothy 6:17
- Don’t put hope in wealth.
- Want treasure in heaven? Surrender.
- Can you walk away from your home?

Mark 10:31
- Selfish heart vs. selfless heart.
- First will be last. Last will be first.

Mark 10:32-39
“You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with”
- True disciples will be astonished (vs. 32) by Jesus. The unsurrendered will be afraid of Jesus.

Mark 10:48
- Blind man jumped up, came to Jesus and he healed him. Want an eager, joyful heart, get to Jesus.
- Surrender to Jesus to get back up again.
- Stay surrendered to stay with Jesus.
- A spiritual analogy was drawn between the Disney movie “Up” and being surrendered to Christ. It’s time to downsize and fly with God. It’s time to get up with Jesus.

Thank you for this outline. I can’t wait to rent the “Up” movie for my little girl, so I can fully appreciate your lesson. I’m ready to fly.
