Old Guys Rule – Outline

We live in a culture that glorifies youth, but in the kingdom of God, everyone is precious.

Ecclesiastes 12
- Remember your creator in your youth, because you will get old. People eventually lose physical abilities the older they get.
- But in the kingdom, old guys rule.

Genesis 5:21
- Enoch walked with God 365 years, then God took him. His son lived even longer.
- Old age guarantees nothing but death. Must follow God no matter your age.
- The older you are as a follower of Christ, the harder it gets.
- Yet life is glorious when you walk with God.

Song of Songs 2:15
- Foxes destroy vineyards
- What foxes do you have in your life?
- Do not neglect prayer and fasting, family devotionals, discipling times, daily contact.

Laziness Destroys Faith

Proverbs 10:26
- Lazy disciple are like smoke to the eyes
Proverbs 13:4
Proverbs 24:30-34
Proverbs 24:36
- Don’t make excuses.
Proverbs 26:13-15
- When you chase the foxes (sin) out

From Caleb we learn that the Dream never dies.

Joshua 14:6-15
- Joshua was 109 old at the time.
- Caleb received lands from God at 85 years old because he followed God wholeheartedly. He received hill country–difficult to conquer. But Caleb had conviction. That’s where Abraham, Sarah, Isaac and other patriarchs were buried.
- Faithful disciples don’t retire–they retread.
- If you are a disciple who has drifted, move to a faithful group of disciples, get restored and get to work.

From John the apostle we learn that love cannot die.
1 John 4:16-21
- John, the “son of thunder,” became the “apostle of love” in his later years. Died at about age 90.
- Problems are solved by disciples loving one another. That’s what John told people repeatedly in his old age.
- Create fellowship where
1) love is preeminent
2) you get hard line about sin–call for repentance
3) people feel safe to get open

Mark 10:27-30
- All things possible with God.
- Do you have something to die for?

From the old men in the Bible, we learn to…
- Do anything to walk with God
- Go anywhere
- Give up everything
