Sacred Parenting – Outline
While this class is for those married with children, most of these faithful lessons also apply to single parents as well.
Hebrews 11:7
- Noah was warned, and by faith he built ark to save his family.
- We have been warned by God.
- Men need to lead spiritually.
- We’re all building something… either for God or Satan.
- Challenge today is keeping family sacred. Other things are pulling at us for attention.
- Takes fear of God to raise faithful children. How quickly do you change? How do you view obedience? Are you serving God with all your heart? Do you have idols in your heart?
Deuteronomy 6:1-2
- Obey and fear God so generations after you can have opportunity to know God.
- Your children are crucial to the continuation of the church.
- If family life is messed up, have faith and make changes.
Malachi 3:17
- God’s people are treasured possessions
Three areas to focus on to have sacred parenting:
a) Sacred Goals in Parenting
Matthew 22:34-40
- Greatest commandments
- Raise kids to love God. That’s your focus.
- Tell your kids what inspires you about God. Share your heart. Walk through life and point things out.
- Be humble. Communicate and pray with your kids.
- Loving others: Teach kids to respect. Demand that your kids respect others, not just you. Teach how to be friendly.
- Teach how to serve. Get advice.
- No rolling of the eyes.
b) Parents must have Sacred Relationships with…
1. God.
Has to be humble, evangelistic, open, have confession to God.
2. Spouse.
Kids get security from parents having great, godly marriage. When there is conflict in your marriage, the kids will learn to sin as parents have sinned. Apologize and be humble.
3. Children.
You can’t encourage your kids enough. Don’t be stuck in a critical mindset. Praise and serve. Draw them out of deep waters. Ask the hard questions. Connect with your kids. Be creative and find out
c) Sacred Times
1. Dinner table. Talk at dinner.
2. Bedtime. Talk, read, pray together.
3. Getting kids ready for school.
4. Family devotionals. Have them at least weekly: 10 minutes of singing, 5 minute lesson, role playing and prayer.
5. The car
6. Dates. Have special times to take out your kids individually. Make it fun and have good talks.
What are you discipling your kids to be? Make it about God.
