A Time to Remember – Outline

There is a bonus version of the song “Angels We Have Heard on High” sung by our kids choir that you can listen to at the close of this year-end sermon. The theme of looking back with gratitude and seeing where God has taken you from (your old life) and where he is leading you to is covered in a powerful overview of Joshua 24.

Joshua 24:1 Note that when Joshua gathered the people they presented themselves before God. We need to remember that when we gather as a church it is not just to meet with eachother, but to present ourselves before God.

Joshua 24:2-7 Who did these things? God did! God is reminding the Isrealites of the many things that he has done in their history and what they had seen with their own eyes. After this He says, “Then you lived in the desert for a long time.” Why did they live in the desert? Because they forgot God and were faithless.

A time to remember where would you be without God. Who were you before you became a disciple? How has God fought for you? Remember His promises and all the ways He’s blessed you (James 1:17).

A time to remember the covenant you made with God. Joshua 24:14-15 Think about doing what is best, not just in terms of right and wrong and not what is best for you, but what is best for God. We can trust God’s covenant with us – He’s always faithful. Remember what you said when you were baptized – Jesus is Lord. What foreign gods do you need to get rid of today? The Isrealites were tempted with the gods of their forefathers (tradition) and the gods of the people around them (the world).
