Treasure in Heaven – Outline

Satan wants you to put your treasure in the world. God wants you to store up treasure in heaven (Matthew 6:19-24). Where is your treasure?

- we think we can balance serving both God and money
- it cannot be done with our hearts
- God’s treasure is his disciples

Matthew 6:25-34
- Do not worry!
- Look what people are willing to do for money
- are we giving God everything?

2 Corinthians 5:1-10
- this was the most written about and researched message that Paul preached

POINT 1 – THIS WORLD IS NOT MY HOME

- Christian expectation is the certainty of a physical resurrection and transformation
- death places us in the presence of Christ
- so why do we fear death? because we live by sight
- Earth is compared to being naked in a tent
- Heaven is compared to being clothed in a building built by God
- Paul was a tent-maker and knew what this meant (that the wind would blow the tent away)

Psalm 39:4
- David’s prayer that we need to pray when our treasure is on Earth

James 4:14
- life is a mist
- we can’t put our treasure in a mist

1 Peter 1:17
- we are strangers on Earth

James 4:4
- a friend of the world is an enemy to God

Philippians 3:18-20
- we live as enemies of the cross of Christ
- life is hard because we are not from here (i.e. like an immigrant in a country with no rights)

1 Peter 2:11
- we are aliens/strangers here on Earth

2 Corinthians 5:18-20
- God makes his appeal through us as his ambassadors

POINT 2 – THE END OF LIFE IS NOT THE END OF LIFE

- we are not happy here because we are not supposed to be happy here on Earth
(i.e. like a fish living on land – it’s in the wrong environment)

“All that is not eternal is eternally useless” – C.S. Lewis

- everything on Earth is STBA (Scheduled To Burn Anyway)

Hebrews 2:14-15
- so many people live in slavery to the fear of death
- Jesus died so that we don’t have to fear that
- we are enslaved to worldly passions (slave to sin)
- fear paralyzes us
- do not fear death, fear comfort on Earth

Hebrews 2:1
- pay careful attention so we do not drift away

Galatians 6:1
- we restore others gently, but watch out that we don’t fall away
- Jesus will outbid everyone as our “slave trader”
- we were bought for a price
