Lies We Believe - Outline

Things aren’t always what they seem.

Ephesians 6:10-15
- We are in a war. But sometimes you don’t feel like you’re in a war, when you’re dull.
- Right now Satan is trying to deceive you.

1 Peter 5:8-9
- Satan is cunning and devouring. He can gradually devour over time and you may not notice.

John 8:42-44
- Satan is a murderer, liar and father of lies.

Let’s attack the lies. How? With repentance. John and Jesus preached this (Mark 1).
- Repentance starts with changing your mind: a complete change in attitude and action (head and heart).
- Satan’s lies involve watering down repentance.

2 Corinthians 7:8-13
- How is your own repentance?
- How are you at calling others to repent?
- Must have godly sorrow.
- Don’t have worldly sorrow. A deceived mind is defensive when sin is pointed out.
- Godly sorrow: earnest, eager, indignant, alarm, concern, ready to see justice
- Don’t be quick to rationalize and justify your sin.
- We hate sin because we know what it does to God. God sacrificed Jesus for our sin.
- So often we’re numb to our sin. We need to be alarmed.
- Parents must lay down boundaries and consequences for their children.

Jeremiah 8:8-12
- Must call others to repent.
- Lying pen of the scribes is influenced by Satan.
- Message can’t be just “peace peace.” But this is coming from many pulpits today.
- When we don’t call each other to repent, we are dressing wounds as though it were not serious (v. 11).

Lie 1) I don’t need to change.
Lie 2) I can’t change.

Reasons why we don’t change: Lulled into mediocrity. So come to your senses before you find yourself in the pigpen of life.

Why else don’t people change?
Some of us are hurt by the past as in you tried but you can’t do it.

God can do anything. He is powerful (Matthew 19:26, Luke 1:37, Jeremiah 29:11)
- Let go of past failures. God can change it.

Some of us are holding on to the present: what they have now. Can’t change if holding on to the present.

Another reason why people don’t change: Not allowing others in your life to facilitate change (discipling).

Lie 3) You have all the time in the world to change.

2 Peter 3:1-12
- Must have wholesome thinking.
- Don’t scoff or deliberately forget God.
- Be ready. Day of the Lord comes like a thief.
- We don’t know when our time is up.
- God wants all of us to change (repent). Live holy and godly lives. Make every effort.
- Do you know where you’re going? Don’t wait to change.

Ephesians 3:20-21
God can do anything. Change

John 10:10
- Changing is how we live life to the full.
