Heaven on Earth

A Report from the 2006 World Missions Jubilee in Portland, Oregon
“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.”
Philippians 1:21-26
Here, Paul explains that there is only one thing that could keep him from wanting to depart from this world and be with Christ which is “better by far.” Paul was needed by the disciples so that their faith and joy in Christ would overflow. We of the Chicago International Christian Church want to thank Kip and Elena McKean and the Portland International Church of Christ for their fruitful labor. Through our being with you last weekend, our faith and joy are overflowing on account of you! There were three things that made this year’s jubilee Heaven on Earth for me.

Joel Parlour: The Sinful Saint

“I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”
Psalm 16:7-11
Growing up as a “Kingdom Kid” I had no fear of God whatsoever. My life was full of sin, some that I didn’t even know existed. I was being instructed by the world, not by God. I did not put the Lord first in any area of my life. I lived the way I wanted to and had the friends I chose. And it was obvious.

Special Origin Episode!
Joe: Comic books made it easy for me to believe that heroes were real. Every month the hero invented new ways to fight evil. That’s what I wanted to do. Of course, super-heroes either waited until they received their super powers to take action (Spider-Man), or they waited until something radical happened to change them forever (Batman).
